MAZINAIGANSUPPLEMENTPAGE2SPRINGSUMMER2014Relaysunitetribessince198989SOLIDARITYRUNThe1989AnishinaabeSolidarityRelayJuly10-14The1989AnishinaabeSolidarityRelaywasbornintheaftermathofthe89sspringspearingseasonthatwitnessedaheightenedanduglyprotestagainstOjibweexercisingtheirtreatyrightsinWisconsin.April261987atAshlandCountysButternutLakewasanomenofthingstocome.Approximately200-300protestersmanyintoxicatedarrivedatthelandingthatnightinprotestofspringspearfishing.Spearersandfamiliesweresubjectedtoracialslursandharassingcomments.Themoodwasugly.ThecrowdsurroundedthesmallcontingencyofNativefisher-menandfamiliesandtheabilityofenforcementtocontrolthelargecrowdwasquestionable.AfewdayslaterthetribesrespondedwithashowofsolidarityonApril30whenfishermenfromsixWisconsintribesreturnedtoButternutLaketospearundauntedbythethreatsandtauntsexperiencedfournightsprevious.Withstimulusfromseveralanti-Indianorganizationsandmixedmessagesfromthestateprotestsburgeonedacrossthecededterritoriesinthelate1980sandlandingsceneswerefilledwithracisttauntssignsandsymbolsaswellasthreats.Rockswerethrownandballbearingswerelaunchedatspearfishermenfromwristrockets.Theprotestcontinuedtocrescendorequiringmassiveenforcementeffortstoprotectpublicsafety.YettheOjibwecontinuedtofishwhilestateandtribalnegotiatorssometimesbitterlyhammeredoutagreementstogovernvarioustreatyseasons.ThevoicesofracialhatredwereveryfreshinmindwhenLacduFlambeausErnieSt.GermainetraveledtoLacVieuxDesertLVDtorunintheNewWorldRunwithBillyMillsinMarch1989.TherehemetupwithLVDrunnergiiweBettyMartin.Bothwereconcernedatthetimeaboutunifyingthetribesandheal-ingNativecommunities.TherehadalreadybeensometalkbetweenKemoGaryKmiecikandErnieaboutapossiblerunaroundtheLacduFlambeaurezduetotensionsinthehighschoolbutitwasBillyMillsinspirationalmessageaboutthehealingcapacityofrunningthatreallysparkedtheideafortheSolidarityRelayMartinsays.HiswordshischallengesmadeusthinkWhynotuserunningtobringthecommunitiestogetherTheideawasdauntingbutthatsparkignitedafireandthechallengewastaken.TheproposedrelayscoursewouldconnectsevenOjibwebandsallcommunitiessufferingfromthehostileatmospherethatsimmeredinneighboringtownsschoolsandevenchurches.TherelayhadamessageaccordingtoSt.GermaineInordertogetthroughallthenegativewithoutstrikingbackinangerweneedtocometogetherasonemindoneheart.Thereisnothingwecantaccomplishtogether.Theyknewtherelaywouldrequireaconcertedefforttoorganizeandrecruitacoreteam.Sheknewpeople.Iknewpeople.Kemowouldknowpeople.TherewereNeilsKmiecikkids.Wedidsomepressreleases.GotPishkoLarryNe-sperSt.Germainerelates.HeandMartinbeganbrainstormingasthevisionofthe1989SolidarityRelaygrewintheirminds.Meanwhilethescenesofprotestsinthespringof89worsenedwithlargecrowdsformingandpushingagainstpolicelinesatlandingsacrosstheWisconsincededterritories.EnforcementpersonnelfromoutoftheareawerecalledintoprotectpublicsafetywhileorganizationslikePARRandSTAheldralliestospurpeopleon.Tribalboatswereswampedbyspeedboatsmakinglargewakes.TribalmembersweremetwithviciousthreateningsignsandchantsandapricewasputontheheadofLacduFlambeausLdFTribalJudgeTomMaulson.RunningtraditionstaysstrongthroughtheyearsTheoriginalcoursepresentedbyErnieSt.Germaineforthe1989relay.Protesterscrowdedonboatlandingsnightlyeachspringinthelate80stoharassandthreatentribalmembersexercisingtheirtreatyrighttospearfsh.CorerunnerGregLeGaultcarriedthissignonhisvehicleshowingsolidaritywiththetribes.Inresponsetothegrowingprotestandracialharassmentevidencedin1987thetribesgatheredatButternutLakeAshlandCountyasashowofsolidarityintheircommitmenttoexercisetheiroff-reservationtreatyrightsdespitetheharassmentandthreats.SeveraltriballeadersspokeduringthegatheringincludingLacduFlambeausTomMaulsonleftwhileprotesterslingeredinboatsjustoffthelanding. PAGE3MAZINAIGANSUPPLEMENTSPRINGSUMMER201489SOLIDARITYRUNByJuly101989thestartoftherelaythecorerunnershadgrownto24nativesandnon-nativescommittedtomakethe400plusmilesconnectingsevenreservations.Localcoordinatorsateachstophadalsobeenrecruitedtohelpor-ganizecommunityrunnerstojointherelayforthemilescominginandleavingeachdestination.CoordinatorsincludedEmmanuelPolarMoleLakeSokaogangiiweMartinLVDPattyMayotteBadRiverMarvinDeFoeandDianeBearRedCliffGeneConnorSt.CroixMichaelTaylorandJohnAndersonLacCourteOreillesandErnieSt.GermaineatLacduFlambeau.SomeoftherunnersmetwithLacCourteOreilleselderEugeneBegayNiigaaniigabowatLacduFlambeausRoundHousethenightbeforewhereheofferedthemwordsofencouragement.LeadingthewayoutofthepowwowgroundswereLCOsJohnAndersonandformerLdFChairmanMikeAllenwhocarriedtheflag.AccordingtoErnietherewaslittleorganization.Somerunnerswantedaplanlikearunningorderbuttherewasntonehestates.Theyjuststartedoffcoveringthemiles.RunnersrelayedastaffcarvedbyErnieoverthemileswithallmembersoftheteamrunningtogetherthroughthetownsbutrelayingthemilesbetween.TheirfirstdestinationwastheMoleLakereservationsome60plusmilesaway.Eachstopatthesevenreser-vationsprovedauniqueandwarmexperience.Theywereoftenmetbycommunitymemberswhotookthestaffandcoveredthefinalmilesforthem.Similarlyinthemorningmomsdadsyouthandeldersweretheretohelpthemontheirway.TherelaysparkedanoutpouringatthereservationsSt.Germainerelates.ThepeopletalkedaboutcomingtogetherinthiswayasOjibwepeopleandsharedfoodlaughterandhealing.Daysendedwithfeastsprayersandceremoniesatthehostreserva-tions.TherelayreceivedaneaglefeatherfromeachcommunityfeathersthatwerelaterplacedonErniesstaff.Fortherunnersthecircuitwasanincrediblehealingexpe-rienceErnieexplains.ItwasatRedCliffthattherelaywasget-tingtothepointwherethespiritscomehesays.Therunnerswerewearytheyhaddone120milesin90-degreeheatthedaybefore.Theywerehalfwaythroughtherelay.giiwerecallsItwashot.Weweretotallyfried.TheywonderedHowarewegoingtodothisButatRedCliffFrankDickinsonperformedaceremonyfortherunnersbystrokingtheirlegswithtwoeaglefeath-ers.TherunnersalsoreceivedcedarfortheirleftshoeandFrankexplainedhowthatmedicinewouldaidthemintheirrun.DianeBearwhosmudgedeveryonealsoofferedhealingmedicines.MyfeetweresoblisteredIdidnotthinkIcouldrunthenextdayrecallsgiiwebutthosemedicineshealedherblisteredfeet.Everyoneachedfromtheeffort.WellthepainwentoutofthemjustgoneErnieexplained.FrankwasaskingtheSpiritstowatchoverus.Itisimportantforpeoplebreakingyourselfdown.ThisiswhentheSpiritscome.Spiritscomemoreeasilytoyouthbutolderpeopleneedtogetpitiful.Theyneededtogoabout100milestoreachSt.Croixthenextday.WithfreshclothingthankstotheeffortsofGretchenMorrisacoreteamrun-nerfromRedCliffwhostayedupandwashedeveryonesclothesthatnighttheteamtookoffthenextmorningrefreshed.WemadeittoSt.CroixlikewalkingonairErniesays.AtanotherjunctureintherelayanelderfromSt.CroixandacoreteammemberEvaConnorfacedastiffupwardclimbduringherleg.OthersofferedtodothelegforherErniesaid.ButEvarefusedtherelief.Asagestureofsupporttheentireteamranwithherontheuphilltrek.AtthetopofthehillErniesanganHonorSongrecognizinghereffort.AspecialstopintherelayoccurredattheAinDahIngTreatmentCenterinSpoonerWisconsinwheretheRelaywasgiventhreeeaglefeathersbycounselorHaroldFroggoneeachforcouragewisdomandserenity.ThesewerepresentedtoNeilandKemobothVietnamveteransandlaterplacedonastaffcarriedbyKemo.Haroldsaidtherewasafourthfeatherthatwouldcomelater.MetbyEugeneBegayLCOspiritualleadertheAnishinaabeSolidarityRelayconcludedastherunnersenteredtheLacCourteOreillespow-wowgrounds.ItwasBegaywhotoldthemeverystepwasaprayerandeveniftherunnersweregreetedwithhostilityinsomecommunitiesBegaytoldthemthosepeoplewillsomehowbeaffectedbytherelay.Whentherelayendedmostcorerunnershaddifficultyfacingareturntoeverydaylife.Allagreedthe450-miletrekwasaonce-in-alifetimeprivilegeandhopedtheenthusiasmshownateachreservationespeciallytheoutpouringofyouthfulrunnerscouldberecapturedinsomefashiononanannualbasisasapartialantidotetorampantunemploymentandalcoholismwrotecoreteamrunnerChrisDanielsoninanaccountappearingintheFall1989issueofMazinaigan.ForErniethecoreteammembersbecamecloselikebrothersandsistersandmanyhavestayedintouch.WestucktogetherstayedonatightcaravantheentirerelayErniesays.Itwassuchaspiritualexperienceitbecameahealing.Oftentherunnersstayedtogetherinaclosecaravanastheycoveredthemiles.RunnersincludeJohnAndersonEvaConnorsBethReedNickVanderPuyMikeTaylorDougLiphartLarryNesperandErnieSt.Germaine.BadRiverelderEthelPlucinskicarriedthestaffforastretchnearOdanah.AttheSokaogonMoleLakereservationanothereaglefeatherwasaddedtothestaff.RunnersErnieSt.GermaineLDFandMikeTaylorLCOaregreetedbyMoleLakesEmanuelDocPolerandTimRandall.AttheAinDahIngTreatmentCenterinSpoonerNeilandGaryKmiecikacceptedthreeeaglefeathersonbehalfoftheRelayfromHaroldFroggAinDahIngcounselor.ThefeathersrepresentingcouragewisdomandserenitywereplacedonaveteransstaffcarriedbyGaryKmiecik.Laterafourthfeatherwouldbepresentedtotherunners.MemoriesofSadieMartinVallierewhowas14yearsofageasoneofth MAZINAIGANSUPPLEMENTPAGE4SPRINGSUMMER201490SOLIDARITYRELAYThe1990SolidarityRelayWiththesuccessofthefirstSolidarityRelayanotherwasplannedfor1990onlythistimetheroutewouldextendtoincludetheKeweenawBayIndianCom-munitynearBaragaMichiganandwasentitledtheSecondAnnualAnishinaabeSpiritualRelay.TherelayunitingeightOjibwereservationstookofffollowingceremoniesatLacduFlambeausBearRiverPow-wowgrounds.Manyofthecorerunnerswhohadbeendeeplytouchedin1989returnedforthesecondyear.Coveringaround600milesthecoreteamrunnersranandsometimesskatedwithapurposetoforgesolidaritybetweentribesandtoseekspiritualhealingintheaftermathofthe1990springspearfishingseasonyetanotherseasonfilledwithhostilityandprotest.TheaddedleguptoKeweenawBaytooksomeeffort.AftercampingthenightonthefloorofoneofKeweenawBaysfacilitiestherunnersfacedalongtrektotheRedCliffreservation.Thatyearwewerealldoingmanymiles.Idontknowhowwediditgiiwerecalls.Herlogshows15and16milesperdayonseveralentries.ThejourneytoRedCliffwashotbutrunnersgotrelieffromBadRiver.AtBirchHillontheBadRiverreservationtheteamwasmetwithaDrumandSt.GermainerecallsBadRiveryouthtakingthebatonandrunningforthem.Thecommunityalsogreetedthemwithfooddrinkandsongsonthelawnofthecom-munitycenterinOdanah.DowntheroadRedCliffsMarvinDefoewasinAshlandwithabusfullofRedCliffyouth.Thekidssprintedquarter-milestretchessotherelaymovedquickly.ItwasthefinallapbetweenBayfieldandtheRedCliffreservationthataneaglefeatherwaslostthewhiteeaglefeatherfromRedCliffseeKemosstorybelow.Intheyearsbetween1991and2001theSolidarityRelaytookdifferentformsanddifferentroutes.OneyearanorganizedrelayrantheentirecircumferenceoftheLacduFlambeaureservation.Severalrunswithdifferentpurposesalsotookplaceincludingthe1998WaabanongRunfromLacduFlambeautotheSupremeCourtbuildinginWash-ingtonDCinsupportoftheMilleLacscaseandtheMikwendaagooziwagRunin2000commemoratingtheSandyLakeTragedyandhonoringthoseancestorswhoperishedasaresult.Butitwasntuntil2001thatrunnersreturnedtotheoriginalpathofthe1989-90SolidarityRelays.TheStoryoftheWhiteEagleFeatherRelatedbyGaryKemoKmiecikDuringthe1990RelayonastretchfromBayfieldtoRedCliffthestaffwascarriedbytribalyouthdoingmilesprintsintothereservation.OnthatlegthewhiteeaglefeatherfromRedCliffwaslost.Severaloftherunnerswentbackflashlightsinhandsearchingforthedroppedfeatherinthedarkbutitcouldnotbefound.IwascrushedrelatesKemo.Asavetlosingafeatherislikeleavingbehindafellowveteran.Itnaggedathimandmadeitdifficulttoreallyfocusonotherevents.WhentherelayarrivedatLaCourteOreillesLCOKemofoundEddieBentonGrandChiefoftheThreeFiresMideandgavehimasemaatobaccosayinghedidntknowwhattodoaboutthefeather.Itfeltlikewehaddonesomethingwronghesays.EddiethoughtaboutitandfoundKemoearlythenextmorning.Eddiehadgonedowntothelakeveryearlywhenthefogdriftedoverthewatertoputdownasemaaandhesawthewhitefeatherouttheredancinginthefog.HetoldKemohecouldnowresteasy.ThewhitefeatherisintheSpiritWorldwithallthosevetswhowerelostandnevercamehomeandnevergotaneaglefeather.TheyhaveaneaglefeathernowEddietoldhim.Eddiealsotoldhimtosharethestoryofthewhiteeaglefeatherovertheloudspeakeratthepow-wow.MeanwhileDianeBearinRedCliffhadbeenlisteningtopow-wowmusicandtrimmingabirchbasketwitharimofsweetgrassshefoundonthereserva-tionwhensheheardKemorelatethestoryofthefeatherontheradio.Latershebroughtthebasketdowntothepow-wowgroundsandsoughtoutKemo.TheytookashortwalkandtalkedaboutherlatehusbandAllenBearwhowasalsoafriendofKemos.SheandAllenhadbeenaveryclosefriendtoamanwhodiedduringtheVietnamwarwhenhishelicopterwasshotdown.Henevercamehome.ThenightbeforeDianehadadreamandshesawthatfriendintheairdancingandholdingupawhiteeaglefeatherShehandedthebaskettoKemowholaterduringthe2013HealingCirclerunmetAllenBearssonalsonamedAllenBearandpassedonthebaskettohim.EddietoldKemothatthestoryaboutthewhiteeaglefeathermustberepeated.NowKemodancesfortheveteranswhohavepassed.Hehasbeengiveneaglefeathersfromandinmemoryofsomewhohavewalkedonwhichhealsocarriesonhisstaff.KemosstaffThestaffkeptbyKemowascarvedbythelateNickHockingsofLacduFlambeau.KemohadaskedNicktohelphimcarveastaffhoweveronedayhewassurprisedwhenhemetupwithNickandNickhandedhimabeautifullycarvedandcompletedstaff.Kemotiesallthefeathersthatareplacedonthestaffwhichcar-riesthefourfeathersfromAinDahIngTreatmentCenterandthosefordifferentveterans.ThenaleCelebratingthecompletionofthe89SolidarityRelayatLacCourteOreillesareEvaConnorsSt.CroixandgiiweMartinLacVieuxDesert.ComingintoLCOsHonortheEarthPow-Wowtheteamnearedthejourneysend.Allwererecognizedandwelcomedastheyarrived. PAGE5MAZINAIGANSUPPLEMENTSPRINGSUMMER2014MichitwegandearlyOjibwerunnersInthecenturiesbeforetheconstructionofroadsandhighwirecom-municationlinesrunnersservedavitalroleinOjibwecommunitiesacrosstheupperGreatLakesregion.Bothmenandwomenknownasmichitwegweremessengerswhotraveledbetweenpopulationcentersviawoodlandtrailslakesandrivers.Elderspassedtherunningtraditionontotheirchil-drenandgrandchildrenfosteringalegacythatspannedgenerationsinsomefamilies.MichitwegofthedeepnorthernforestsneededmorethanagoodpairofmoccasinsmakizinanaslongdistancetravelsometimesmeanttotingabirchbarkcanoetoutilizethewaterwayswhereOjibwevillageswereusu-allylocated.ToimproveperformanceandfeellightfootedsomenineteethcenturyOjibwewalkedaroundwithnarrowbagscontainingleadshotstrappedtotheiranklespriortorunning.Assnowaccumulatedandwaterroutesfrozeoverinthewinterthemichitwegreliedonsnowshoesforoverlandtravel.Whenapersonfellillwithoutaqualifiedhealeravailablethemichit-wegweresummoned.Attendedbytobaccoasemaaceremonyandprayeranindividualwasaskedtojourneythroughtheexpansivenorthernforesttocontacthealersinothervillages.SuchexcursionsrangedfromafewdozenmilestowelloveronehundredmilesrequiringthemichitwegtopassthroughotherIndiancommunities.RunnerswereheldinhighesteemandreceivedsupportfromOjibwepeoplealongthewayincludingfoodandlodging.OnlongjourneysthatpassedthroughmultipleOjibwevillageslocalmichitweghelpedcarrymessagesdownthetrailcreatinganintertribalrelaysystem.ManyremarkableperformancesoftheIndianrunnersaregenerallyknown.Theycancoveranextraordinaryspaceofgroundbytheirpersistentandsteadytrot.AsthesparsepopulationofthecountryisscatteredoverwidedistancescasesfrequentlyoccurinwhichaswiftrunnercansaveafamilyfromdestructionandthisisasufficientreasonwhytheOjibwehonourhimasgreatlyasaboldhunterorwarrior.JohannGeorgeKohl1855ExcerptedfromOjibweJourneysbyCharlieOttoRasmussenThisrunwasaturningpointinmylife.Ihadvisitedtheboatlandingsasasupporteroftribalspearfishermenandwomenduringthat1989season.Iwitnessedtheirpatiencecourageandcommit-ment.IalsoheardtheracialslursandwitnessedthathideouspleasurethatsomeoftheprotestorstookindenigratingIndianpeople.IwaspresentatthefeastatLacduFlambeauandthenatButternutLakethateveningwhenIndianpeopleandtheirsupporterssupplantedtheprotestorsonthehighground.IrecallthefirsttimeIspokewithErnieSt.Germaineinthesummerof1989.HephonedmeinChicagoanddescribedhisideaofgatheringacoregroupofvocationalathletestorunbetweentheOjibwecommunitiesthathadenduredthatspearfishingseasonandwereinneedofhealingupliftandexpressionsofgratitude.IjoinedthatgroupandranwiththemthatweekinJulybetweentheBearRiverandHonortheEarthpowwows.Spendingtimewitheachotherrunningvisitingprayingcreatedlife-longfriendshipsforsomeofus.Itisnotoftenthatwehaveopportunitiestoparticipateinanundertakingthatintegratessomanyfundamentalhumancapabilitiesanddispositions.TheSolidarityRunhadspiritualathleticpoliticalsocialandculturaldimensions.Boththepipeandthedrumwereused.Thestaffwecarriedappearedfirstinadreamandthenitwascarvedinsumacthengiftedwitheaglefeathersbythecommunitieswerantosoitaccumulatedsymbolicandspiritualweightevenasitcarriedusoverthelandanddownthehighways.TherunwasakindofpilgrimagethatunitedtherunnersandtheOjibwecommunitiesonthelandscapeofthecededterritories.Thesecommunitieswerebeginningtoexperienceaculturalrenaissanceborninpoliticalconflictovertheexerciseofthetreatyrightstohuntfishandgatheronthoselandsandinthosewatersofthatlandscape.Iwouldreturntorunthesamerouteagainin1990withmanyofthesamecorerunners.InspiredbythepeopleImetonthoserunsIwouldproposedis-sertationresearchattheUniversityofChicagoontheconflictovertheexerciseofthesetreatyrightsandliveatLacduFlambeauformuchof1991todothatresearch.TheworkwouldleadtoabookthebookledtoacareerasaprofessorinMadisonwhereIhavetheopportunitytoteachabouttheindigenousnationsofWisconsinassistthemasaconsultantfromtimetotimeandtowriteabouttheireffortsinnation-building.RefectingontheSolidarityRunof1989after25yearsByPishkoLarryNesperCarryingthestaffRedCliffsMarvinDefoeisjoinedbyLacduFlambeausTinkerMildredElminthe1990relay.Individualsandgroupshelpedthecoreteamthroughoutbothrelaysrunningorwalkingwiththeminsomeinstancesandrelievingthemfordistancesespeciallythemilesonornearthereservations.Inadditiontoreliefontheroadcommunitiesprovidedfoodlodgingandjoinedinceremonies.BadRiverAnishinaabegshowsupportandtaketheirturnonthepavement.DougLipharthandsthestaffofftoBillLontzduringthe1989relay.89-90SOLIDARITYRELAY MAZINAIGANSUPPLEMENTPAGE8SPRINGSUMMER2014HEALINGCIRCLERUNElevenyearsafterthe1990AnishinaabeSolidarityRelaythe2001HealingCircleRunonceagainfollowedthepathsandpurposesofthe89and90relaysunitingthetribesandseekinghealing.ThenGLIFWCExecutiveAdministratorJimSchlenderwasadrivingforcebehindtheHealingCircleRun.TherunevolvedinpartasaresponsetotherunnerspipegiventoGLIFWCaftertheWaabanongRunbyTobasonakwutKinewelderandspiritualleaderfromOjibwaysofOnigamingOntarioCanada.BothJimandNeilfeltaresponsibilitytowardsthepipeandhelpingitfulfillitspurposes.AsveteransofpreviousrunstheywereawaretherunsofferedpowerfulexperiencesbutultimatelytheideaoftheHealingCircleRunemergedwhentheydecidedtojoinaCanadianRunentitledtheHealingJourneywithwhichthe2001HealingCircleRunconnectedinCanada.IthinkJimrealizedthepoweroftherunwhatithaddoneforpeopleandcommunities.HefeltithadtocontinuethathealinghadtocontinuegiiweMartinexplains.Therunimpactslivesinawayweneverforgetshesays.Thereisnotayearthatsomeoneslifeisnotchanged.Peoplewithproblemscomeevenpeoplewhoaresickanddyingandwanttocometogripswithdeath.Everystepisaprayer.Wecarrythoseprayersthroughtheday.Ifyoumadealistofhealingsitwouldbeaverylonglist.Ihopeitcontinuesforever.Itisthatstrongthatpowerful.Jimrecognizedthatstrengthandhealinghadtocontinue.SeveralsacreditemstraveledwiththerunincludingthefourSpiritSticksrepresentingtheFourDirectionsthatwerecarriedontheMikwendaagooziwagRuntherunnerspipeandthepipecarriedbyJim.ThefirstHealingCircleRunbeganattheSt.CroixreservationclosetothedevastationofarecenttornadothatsweptthroughSirenWisconsinanappropriatebeginningforajourneyfocusedonhealing.TheSt.CroixTribewasveryinvolvedinhelpingtheirSirenneighborsprovidingmealsandassistingwithrescueandclean-upSchlenderstatedatthetime.Itwasatimeandaplacewherehealingwasactivelytakingplacewithinthecommunities.DuringtheinitialceremonyontheshoresofBigSandLakeBennyRogersaSt.Croixelderofferedtheopeningprayer.WhenitwashisturntospeakKmiecikrelatedateachingabouthealingthatheheardduringthe1990BigfootRideSiTankaWokiksuyeinSouthDakota.TheridewasamemorialrecallingthetragiceventsatWoundedKnee100yearsearlierwhenBlackElksaidtheHoopoftheNationhadbeenbroken.Weweretoldonemorningbeforestartingoutthatdaysjourneythatforhealingtooccurithadtostartwiththeindividual.Oncehealedthatpersoncouldhelphealhisherfamilyandextendedfamily.Onceafamilywashealedthenitcouldhelphealacommunity.AhealedcommunitycouldhelphealthenationKmiecikrelated.Asthiswasbeingsaidaneagleperchedinanearbytreeflewupandoutoverthelake.OnthefirstmorningofthejourneyJune2lthecoreteamgiiweMartinLacVieuxDesertNeilKmiecikStand-ingRockLakotaandJimSchlenderLacCourteOreillesfacedthefirstlegfromSt.CroixtoLacCourteOreilleswithonlythreepeoplethemselves.TheyweredelightedwhenBennyofferedtowalkthefirsttwomiles.Latertwounexpectedwalkersalsojoinedtohelpcoverabout45milestoLacCourteOreilles.ThatdayNeilandgiiwewererelay-ingeveryothermile.Itwashot.NeilwasrunningthroughStoneLakelookingaheadforhisvanwhichindicatedtheendofhisone-mileleg.Hebegantothinkthismilewasbeingstretchedbecausethevannevercameintosight.Hewentaroundacoupleofturnsbutstillnovan.ThenJimdrovepasthimtolethimknowthatgiiwehadstoppedtogoshoppingShehadlocatedaparticulartreasureSnick-erdoodlecoffeeandleftNeiltofendforhimself.HeendedthatextremelylongmileunderasultryJunesunbysmilingandstatingsimplyHealingishardIndividualsorevengroupsofyoungpeoplefromdifferentreservationsarrivedtohelpcoverthemiles.Alltold72peopleandthreehorseshelpedcover350milesintheWisconsinsegmentofthefirstHealingCircleRunthatendedatRedCliffthatyear.Whiletheprotestshadquietedmanyofthehealingprayerscarriedthroughoutthe2001HealingJourneyaddressedsimilarissuesracismtheneedforunifiedandhealthycommunitiesconcernforMotherEarthandtheneedforpersonalhealing.OnJune27theWisconsinrunnerswalkerstookonanextrastintjoiningwithNelsonJohnsonoriginallyfromAlkoliLakeEsketemcFirstNationBritishColumbiaandMarilynNelsonRoseauxRiverOntariooftheCanadianHealingJourneywhichtraversed1600milesfromAlkoliLaketotheUSCanadianborderinMinnesota.TogethertheCanadianandU.S.participantscoveredthe100milestotheRedLakereservationarrivingonJune28.TheHealingCircleRunsgraduallybecameaGLIFWCinstitutionwithrunsheldeachsummersince2001organizedthroughtheeffortsofNeilKmiecikandJimSchlender.AndtheRuncontinuedtogrow.FromaculturalspiritualstandpointtheHealingCircleRuninfusesourculturalwaysintotherunwalkbyusingasemaathroughthedurationusingthepipesanddrumsbysingingsongstogetherduringceremoniesthattakeplaceeverydaybeforeandaftereachlegofthejourney.PeopleareabletowitnessthepowerofthesesaysJasonSchlenderaparticipantinthe1990RelayandmanyHealingHealingCircleRunrevisitssolidarityrelayspathSt.CroixelderBenRogersassistedgiiweMartinandNeilKmiecikduringtheinitialceremonystartingthe2001HealingCircleRunatBigSandLake.HorsesandridersTyraEricksonSueLemlerandStevieLindenbergescortedrunnersintotheRedCliffreservationin2001.FranVanZileSokaoganMoleLakecarriedtheeaglestaffadistancein2007.AandegSchlendergotanearlystartintherunningtradition. PAGE9MAZINAIGANSUPPLEMENTSPRINGSUMMER2014CircleRuns.Theyreinforceasenseofcommunitywherevertheystopre-establishconnectionswitheldersandfriendssometimescreatingnewfriendships.2003sawover100participantsofallagesjoiningtheRunincludingtheMilwaukeeWalkersandNativeStylesRunnersfromsoutheastWisconsin.Somejoinedforadayortwobutninemenandwomenspentthefullweekontheroadseveralwhowereveteransofthe1989and1990runincludingNeilandGaryKmiecikKemoErnieSt.GermainegiiweMartinandLarryNesperPishko.Anewdestinationaddedinthe03runbroughtrunnerstoWisconsinPointasandyarmoflandjuttingintoGichigamijusteastofSuperiorthesiteofanhistoricOjibwevillagesiteandburialgroundswhereancestorsofFondduLacpeopleareinterred.Around180oftheoriginalburialswereremovedfromWisconsinPointin1918andputintoamassgraveinSuperiorafterarailroadcompanytookpos-sessionoftheland.Onthefinallegofthe03runrunnersrevisitedaformersignificantdestina-tiontheAin-Dah-IngRehabilitationCenteraNativeAmericantreatmentcenter.Duringthe1990AnishinaabeSolidarityRelayrunnersreceivedthreeeaglefeathersfromAin-dah-ingCounselorHaroldFroggforthestafftheycarried.Thefeathersrepresentedwisdomcourageandserenity.Thirteenyearslaterrunnerscarryingthesamestaffreceivedthefourthandfinalfeatherthisoneembodyingstrength.ItwasnicetomakethatconnectionagainsaidKemo.DuringthecourseoftheRunspiritualleadersfromlocalcommunitiesprovidedthoughtsandguidanceatopeningandclosingpipeceremonies.AmongthemwereEugeneBegayLCOLouisTaylorandBenRogersSt.CroixRobGoslinRedCliffDanielBigGeorgeNorthwestBayCanadaandLeonValliereLacduFlambeau.The2004and2005HealingCircleRunscontinuedtoattractpeoplethroughouttheregionmanyjoiningforadayortwotohelpcoverthemiles.In2005themorningceremoniesatRedCliffwelcomedwhatwastobean-otherinaseriesofsultrydays.ButthemorningairwasstillsomewhatcoolandrefreshingasasmallgroupgatheredbyRedCliffsBuffaloArtCenteroverlookingacalmandsparklingLakeSuperior.TherunnerswereheadedtowardFondduLacsBlackBearHotelandCasinosouthofCloquetMinnesotathatday.ThreepipeswerelitthatmorningarunnerspipecarriedbyNeilKmiecikapipecarriedbyJimSchlenderandawomanspipecarriedbyAgnesFlemingLacCourteOreillestribalmemberandcorewalker.AsSchlenderstatedalltheprayersfromthecirclewentuptotheCreatorwiththesmokeofthepipes.SueNicholsBadRivertribalmemberandThreeFiresMidespokewordsandofferedasongonbehalfofnibiwater.AseveryonelookedoutattheexpanseofLakeSuperiortheywereremindedoftheimportanceofcleanpurewatertooursurvivalandtothesurvivalofallonEarth.Sueremindedparticipantsthatwhilewomenespeciallyspeakforthewatertheneedisthereforallofustocareforthewater.Waterwaspassedtoallparticipantsaspartoftheceremony.RunnersandwalkerswereledoutoftheRedCliffreservationthatyearbyGrandmaGennyGenivieveGoslinthen85yearsoldandaregularparticipantintheHealingCircleRunasitpassesthroughRedCliffeachyear.Therewasanoticeablevoidasthe2006HealingCircleRunpreparedfortheannualjourney.OneoftheRunsfoundersJamesSchlenderhadunexpectedlypassed.ItwashisandNeilscommitmentthatultimatelyturnedtheRunintoanannualGLIWFCevent.FacingtheRunwithouthisfriendwasdifficultforKmiecikbuthewentforwardwiththeRunafterreceivingcommitmentsfromJimsfamilytostrengthenthecoreteamallfiveofwhomparticipated.ItwasnoeasycommitmentforJimswifeAgnesFlemingLacCourteOreilleswhostruggledwithmisgivingsaboutthe2006runthinkingitwouldbebettertoavoidthepainbystirringmemoriesofpastrunswithJim.Iwasunsure.IknewitwouldbepainfulsherelatedbutshesoonreceivedareprimandsheissurecamefromJimremindingherthattherunwasnotnecessarilyaboutpersonalhealingbutaboutcommunityhealingandunityevenuniversalhealing.TherunwasneverreallyaboutusbutforAnishinaabepeopleandsharingthebenefitsofprayerandunityamongallpeopleshesaid..Itsaboutthepowerofcollectiveprayers.2006sawthecirclewidenedinauniqueway.NativeinmatesfromafederalcorrectionalinstitutioninNewJerseyjoinedtheRuninspiritonthefirstandlastdayswithacommitmenttoruntwelvemilesintheprisonscompoundonbothofthosedays.In2007and2008theHealingCircleRuncontinuedtoconnecttheeightreservationsenjoyingthewelcomeandhospitalityofthecommunitiesastheyarrivedanddepartedontheirjourney.TheceremonieswhichincludedcommunitymembersalongwiththerunnerswalkershadbecomeassignificanttomanyastheRunitself.AsGLIFWCstudentinternSamMadayreportedin2008therunnerswerefueledbyprayerandhadtheirheartsandmindsfocusedonthosewhoneededhealing.HewroteEachmorningstartedat800amwithaceremonyandprayer.Theuniquefragranceofburningsagefilledtheceremonialcircleandwaftedthroughtheairbeyond.Eachmemberofthecirclewascarefullysmudgedwiththesmokeproducedbytheembersoftheburningsageaprocesswhichcleansesandclarifiestheheartandmind.Everyonewasgivenapinchofasemaatobaccotopraywith.Latertheasemaawasgatheredintoabowlwhichwasthenusedtofuelthepipe.Thepipecarrierspassedaroundthepipeforanyonetoprayandsmoke.Eachparticipantalsoreceivednibiwaterservedfromcooperbowls.Theimportanceofwaterwasacknowledgedasanelementneededforalllife.Itises-sentialthatitisacknowledgedintheceremonyandthattherelationshipbetweenthewaterandtherunnersisalsorecognizedandrespected.Thebitofwaterthateveryonetookanddrankhelpedthemthroughouttheday.Alsopassedaroundwereodeiminanstrawberriesimportantbecausetheyaretheheartberry.Offeredtobreakthefastinthemorningthestrawberrysymbol-izestheheartincolorandinshape.Fortherunnersandwalkerstheysymbolizedtheveinsandpumpingofbloodthroughthebodyaswell.HEALINGCIRCLERUNIn2005thelateJimSchlenderSr.thenGLIFWCexecutiveadministratorspeakswhileholdingMitiginaabeastaffgiventoGLIFWCbythelateNiigaaniigabowEugeneBegayandusedasatalkingstick.JimswifeAgnesFlemingstandstotheside.AveteranofmanyrunsthatcametotheRedCliffreservationGenivieveGoslinknownasGrandmaGennywasaregularparticipantintheHCRandparticipatedinthe2005talkingcircle. MAZINAIGANSUPPLEMENTPAGE10SPRINGSUMMER2014HEALINGCIRCLERUNUnderstandingtherelationshipbetweenthestrawberryandonesselfaswellasmansdependenceonpurewaterexemplifyhowtheOjibwepeoplearecon-nectedtotheearth.ThisconnectionmadethroughtherunhelpshealtheOjibwepeopleandthosewhoparticipatethereforethisuniquerunsnameTheHealingCircleRun.In2009JennySchlenderaveteranofseveralyearssharedherperceptionsoftheRuninpartasfollowsThecommunitiesthatwevisitedthissummerwereover-whelminglysupportivenotonlywiththeaccommodationsbutwiththeirfreshwalkinglegsthosearealwayswelcomeaswecoverthemilesbetweenreservations.Thejoyindoingtherunishearingthestoriesthatpeoplebringalongwiththeopportunitytoshareyourownstory.Witheachcommu-nitywearejoinedbynewpeopleandeveryonebringssomethingtosharewhetheritisastorythatisinspiringorajokethatmakesuslaugh.Whethertheyarewithusforadayoraweekpeopleleaveapieceofthemselveswithus.Aswegatheratourtalkingcircleswhichbothbeginandendeachdaywetellstoriesofthesepeopleandhowtheyhavetouchedus.ThisyearweweregiventheConanStompauniquetraditioninstitutedbyConanKmiecik.TheConanStompbeganwhenclos-ingthetalkingcircleinLacDuFlambeau.AsConanfinishedwhathehadtosayhetookMitiginaabeastaffthatispassedduringthetalkingcirclestompeditonthegroundandpassediton.Thisthenleadthenextpersontodothesamething.PrettysoonthewholegroupwasdoingtheConanStomp.Simplestoriesandactionslikethishappenontherunthatmakeuslaugh.Laughterishealing.Howeversometimesthestoriesthataretolddontmakeanyonelaughsomearethestoriesofothersillnessesandthestrugglesintheirlives.Wetakeallthesestoriesandputthosethoughtsandothersintoourasemaatobaccoandwepray.Whenwestepoutontheroadweputdownourtobaccoandwethinkofthosethatcannotbewithuswhethertheyareinthespiritworldortheyareunable.Wewalkorrunthosemileswiththehopeofhealing.Thecirclescreatedeachyearbytherunarelikethegrowthcirclesinatreetrunk.Eachnewcircleencompassesthosethatwereformedearlier.Theyareseparatebutallpartofonelivingandgrowingentity.AndsoIbelieveitiswiththeHealingCircleRun.Overthelast20yearsmanylivesmanystoriesmuchlaughterandalsofallingtearsmergetocreatetheHealingCircleRunandcontinuetheprocessofhealing.TheHealingCircleRuncontinuedtogrowfrom2011through2013withparticipationfrom179peopletohelpcoverthe580-milecirclein2011.ThatwasayearofseveralfirstsaccordingtoNeil.ForoneitwasthefirstyearBayMillstribalmembersparticipatedcomingfromafartohelpcovermilesbetweenLacVieuxDesertandRedCliff.ItwasalsothefirstyearFondduLacmembersparticipatedandranorwalkedtotheReservationBusinessCommitteebuildingsignificantlyexpandingthecircle.Atotaloffifteencoreteammembersparticipatedintheentire2011runprob-ablythelargestnumberofrunnerswalkerstocompletetheentirecoursesincetheRunsinception.In2012about150runnersandwalkersjoinedthegreatcircleputtingtheirfeettothepavementastheymovedfromreservationtoreservation.ButIn2013participationintheRunpeakedwith330runnerswalkerscoveringthecircleyouthmakingupalargeportionofthoseparticipants.RemembertheRunstartedwithjustthreepeoplein2001.The2013coursetookaslightdetouratHurley.Whilecorerunnersandoth-erskepttocourseonHighway2headingtoBadRiverandAshlandabouttentotwelveBadRiverveteransfromtheOdanahLegionPost25andafewotherBadRivermembersheadedfromHurleytoMellencarryingtheirveteransstaffflagandrunningbatons.WethoughtitwasimportantasogichidaatomakeastatementabouthonoringtheEarthconsideringtheminingproposalandthiswasahealingwalksaysBadRiverveteranDaveDAcquisto.SeveralwomenalsotookfooduptotheLCOHarvestCampinthePenokeesonthatlegofthejourney.WegotsomeresistanceinHurley.NamecallingobscenegesturesandallsaysDAcquisto.EscortedthroughthedowntownstretchbythesheriffsdepartmentthecontingencyheadedtowardsMellenwheretheywerereceivedwithsomecheers.Wedefinitelyplantodothisagainin2014.ItisimportantforthecommunityDAcquistosays.HCRrunnersposewithMoleLakesupportrunnerswalkersin2008.ThelateLeoLaFernierRedCliffsharedwordsatHCRmorningceremonies.GatheringatPipestoneFallsnearLacCourteOreillesatthebeginningofHealingCircleRun.St.CroixelderandspiritualleaderBenRogerscenterprovidedmanyopeningprayersonbehalfoftheHCRandtherunnersovertheyearsandSt.Croixrunnersandwalkerscameinsupportfortheopeninglegoftherun.JasonStarkwithdaughterZaagachiiwe-gaabawikhelpedoutinthe2008HCR.
