Ma'lingan killed near Red Cliff Reservation
ODANAH, WIS.—The Great Lakes Indian Fish & Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC) is aware of the killing of a single female ma'lingan (wolf) from the Echo Valley Pack near the Red Cliff Ojibwe Reservation. Ma'iinganag are protected under the Endangered Species Act to help reestablish their original range in the Great Lakes Region. To the Anishinaabe people Ma'linganag are teachers and relatives. GLIFWC laments the loss of this important family matriarch.
While the investigation of this incident is ongoing, as it involves a non-tribal member, GLIFWC supports a full inquiry into this matter by the US Fish & Wildlife Service, Red Cliff Band, and other appropriate law enforcement
