These regulations apply to members camping at National Park Service campgrounds within the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore (APIS-NL).
Make sure to check the Treaty Camping & Public Access booklet for more information. You are responsible for knowing your Tribe's regulations, which can be more restrictive and are subject to change.
Check with your Tribe or GLIFWC with questions.
You must possess a valid off-reservation camping permit for camping at an APIS-NL campsite. Your tribal conservation department (or other tribally designated authority) can issue camping permits. Camping permits can also be obtained through the NAGFA online self-permitting system. glifwc.nagfa.net/online/.
You may only camp within the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore (APISNL) with a valid reservation through the APIS-NL Visitor Center in Bayfield, Wisconsin. Reservations are made on a first-come, first-served basis and are subject to campsite availability. Reservations must be made in advance of the first day of camping in-person or by phone at 715-779-3398.
Reservations are non-transferable, and the name on the reservation will be held responsible for anyone in the party who fails to comply with all applicable camping rules.
Reservations are valid for no more than 14 consecutive days.
You must follow all posted rules and regulations at the campground.
Campsite check-in and check-out time is 3:00 pm. Quiet hours are in place from 10:00 pm - 6:00 am.
All tents must be located on a tent pad, where one is provided.
Campfires must be built in fire rings or in grills where provided. Only dead, fallen wood may be used for campfires.
All refuse must be carried out of the APIS-NL. No member shall throw any garbage in Lake Superior, bury garbage, or dispose of garbage in toilets.
Where bear-resistant storage lockers are provided, all food must be locked up between meals or when not attended. When they are not provided, all food and garbage must be hung from a tree at least 12 ft. above the ground and 6 ft. from the trunk of a tree.
Pets must be leashed. Leashes cannot be longer than 6 ft. and pets must always be attended.
