Ojibwe (called Chippewa by the United States Government) and Ottawa land cessions to the United States in treaties signed in 1836, 1837, 1842, and 1854, total approximately 73,150,000 acres. In the treaties, native leaders ensured rights to hunt, fish, and gather on ceded territories would be maintained. Today, these rights are commonly called treaty rights.
